The Oklahoma House on Wednesday unanimously approved the consent decree which settles a lawsuit against the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services for allegedly violating the rights of inmates who had been declared incompetent to stand trial. The suit claims those inmates did not receive timely court-ordered competency restoration treatment.
Oklahoma Voice’s Emma Murphy writes the decree requires the Department to reform competency evaluations and restoration treatment programs.
The Senate is up next to either approve or disapprove the settlement.
