David Boren Passes at Age of 83

The last Democrat to have served Oklahoma in the U.S. Senate has passed away. David Boren was 83-years old.

Boren held the U.S. Senate seat from 1979 to 1994. He also served as Governor from 1975 to 1979. From 1967 to 1974, Boren was a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives. He was also the president of the University of Oklahoma from 1994 to 2018, even though his retirement came on the heels of controversy.

Since Boren’s passing on Thursday, several Oklahomans have expressed their condolences. Governor Kevin Stitt has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Boren.

Governor Kevin Stitt:

“Today, I join Oklahomans in mourning the loss of former Governor David Boren, who dedicated his life to serving our state. His love of Oklahoma was evident in everything he did. Sarah and I extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Molly, and the entire Boren family.”

Congressman Tom Cole:

“In spite of the controversies about David Boren’s personal life, there is no question that he was one of the most consequential political and academic leaders in Oklahoma history. As a reform minded legislator, a popular two-term governor, and a pragmatic, deal-making senator, Boren really did accomplish much that benefited not only our state, but also our country as a whole throughout his long career in elective politics.

“Boren was equally effective as the University of Oklahoma President. In fact, his impact is still visible today on the OU campus through academic programs, architecture, infrastructure, and the university’s dynamic role in the civic, cultural, and economic life of the state.

“While David Boren and I belonged to different political parties and never served together at neither the state or federal level, our paths did cross many times over the years. We often worked together on matters we both saw as beneficial to Oklahoma and to OU. I always found him to be insightful, pragmatic, and dedicated to advancing the public good.

“I extend my sincere sympathy to the Boren family, his friends, and his associates. May he rest in peace.”

Oklahoma Senator Mary Boren:

“The life and legacy of David L. Boren left a lasting impact of excellence. His contributions to his family and community were a blessing, and I had the privilege of calling him my cousin and constituent.

“Many hearts, including my own, feel profoundly grateful for President Boren as we sing, ‘Live on University.’ May his loved ones find comfort in his loving memory and from our collective gratitude for his dedication to public service.”
