Lankford Introduces Bill to Curb Gun Smuggling into Mexico

U.S. Senator James Lankford is working with U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan to reintroduce legislation meant to curb the smuggling of guns and money into Mexico. Both Senators are members of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

The Enhancing Southbound Inspections to Combat Cartels Act would require at least ten percent of southbound vehicles to be inspected to the extent practicable, authorize more agents to investigate smuggling of guns and money from the U.S. to Mexico, as well as, drug smuggling, human trafficking, child trafficking, and unauthorized entries from Mexico to the U.S., and purchase another 50 x-ray inspection systems.

“With border crossings at a record low, the results speak for themselves. President Trump’s leadership is making America safer; the southern border is much more secure than it was a year ago,” Lankford said. “But US Customs and Border Protection still doesn’t have the resources they need to stop gun smuggling to the criminal cartels in Mexico. We need to ensure border law enforcement has the personnel and technology to crack down on criminal activity that puts Americans at risk.”
