Oklahoma Awards $3.2 Million for After-School Learning Programs

The Oklahoma State Department of Education has awarded more than $3.2 million in grants to support after-school and other out-of-school learning programs across the state.

Thirteen new recipients will receive funding through the federal 21st Century Community Learning Center program. The five-year grants support programs for students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, with an emphasis on high-poverty communities and schools needing additional support.

Programs provide tutoring and assistance in reading and math along with activities including robotics, science, art, music, college and career readiness, and health and fitness. Programs can operate before and after school, during the summer and over holiday breaks.

The new grant recipients are Atoka, Checotah, Cottonwood, Macomb, Morris, Roland, Sand Springs, Shawnee, Stigler, Watts, Westville and Zion public schools, along with the Boys and Girls Club Red River Valley. Individual awards range from $115,000 to $300,000.

OSDE now supports 50 grantees operating at 92 locations statewide with more than $13 million in federal funding annually. The programs serve more than 16,000 Oklahoma students each year.
