Mayors from across Oklahoma met at the state Capitol today to debate issues facing municipalities and craft a legislative agenda for the 2012 legislative session.
The Oklahoma Congress of Mayors is a one-day event held and sponsored by the Mayors Council of Oklahoma (MCO) and the Oklahoma Municipal League (OML). Mayors and vice mayors spend the morning in committee meetings before gathering for a general session in the House Chamber in the afternoon.
Rep. Joe Dorman, who served as parliamentarian for the Congress of Mayors, said he was honored to take part. The parliamentarian assists the presiding officer with the running of the floor activity of the general session.
“I am delighted to serve these municipalities in crafting their agenda for the upcoming legislative session,” Dorman, D-Rush Springs, said. “The Council of Mayors is an important annual event that helps municipal officials and lawmakers work closely together to serve their constituents.”
Choctaw Mayor Randy Ross was selected by the MCO to serve as the honorary Speaker of the House for the event. “The Oklahoma Congress serves a great service to our municipal officials,” explained Ross. “It allows them to debate and discuss real issues in a legislative format. Through the process we will develop a strong legislative platform for the upcoming State Legislative Session.”
