Mickey Edwards Leaves GOP over Protest Vote

Former U.S. Congressman Mickey Edwards was the first Republican to flip the Fifth Congressional District from Democrat to Republican in the 1970s. Now, he is leaving the GOP because of the protest of the Electoral College certification on January 6.

Edwards wrote an Op-Ed titled, “A Republican Journey” for The Bulwark outlining his history with the Republican Party and his reasons for leaving it.

“I have been a Republican for 62 years. I have been a Goldwater conservative, a Reagan conservative, and a W conservative.

And I have now left the Republican party. A party that has been at the center of my entire adult life. A party that defined me to others and to myself. It has become the opposite of what it was. It has become a cult idolizing a ruler, a trasher of institutions of democracy driven by falsehoods and hatreds,” Edwards writes.

I worked for Mickey Edwards’ election in 1976. I believed he was sincere. Who knows? The bottom line is that, in the words of the liberal media, he has “grown.”
